Drummers Who “Don’t Play With a Click” Are Bad Drummers

I used to say “I don’t play with a click- I like the music to have more feel”. Well what I was REALLY saying was I CAN’T play to a click and “having more feel” was just my excuse for not being able to hold tempo. Yes, I know records in the 70’s were recorded without a click and felt great, but unless you build a time machine, you’re stuck playing in TODAY’s world- which means playing with a click. To be clear- I’m only referring to drummers who say this as a blanket statement. Of course I don’t always play with a click- but if you hear a drummer say “I don’t play with a click” chances are you’re talking to a bad drummer in denial.
